Early reading and Phonics

Early Reading and Phonics at Belton:

Reading is a vital skill and we place the highest priority on learning to read and then reading for pleasure which is truly a life skill. We value the role of parents acknowledging that you have the greatest influence on the achievement of young people through supporting their learning in the home. It is your support of learning in the home environment that makes the maximum difference to achievement and this is particularly true with reading and sharing books with your child. Our aim for all our pupils is that they learn to read in a systematic but fun way resulting in them being independent readers who have a love of books and reading.

At school, throughout EYFS and KS1, your child will learn to read through a combination of ‘synthetic’ phonics and practising with ‘real’ books. We use actions from Jolly Phonics to deliver the Letters and Sounds programme of phonics and start straightaway as soon as your child enters school in the Meerkat class. We use reading books which help the children use their phonics to sound out and blend the words.
